CHILD AND YOUTH WORKER

The Child and Youth Worker provides support to students experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioural challenges that may interfere with their academic success and overall well-being. Working as part of the school team, the CYW promotes a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment while fostering positive relationships among students, staff and families.


Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a three-year post secondary child and youth worker diploma program or equivalent plus a minimum of one to two years related job experience in child youth work;
  • Good working knowledge of relevant legislation and the developmental needs of children/youth;
  • Strong knowledge of group work practice and the ability to function effectively in group work;
  • Ability to function independently within the framework of a team.
  • Self-starter with strong, organizational skills and the ability to manage caseload duties;
  • Ability to deal with students in a calm, compassionate and professional manner;
  • Ability to maintain discretion with confidential information;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Have a reliable vehicle and a valid Ontario driver’s license is an asset as travel throughout the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Region may be required;


Duties/Responsibilities

  • Participate, as required, in meeting the social, emotional and behavioural objectives for students;
  • Assist in planning social, emotional and behavioral management programs, including participation in the delivery to students;
  • Provide support in collaboration with teachers, parents and other support services;
  • Assist in implementing therapeutic programs to individual and small groups of students;
  • Provide counseling and crisis intervention to individuals and groups;
  • Observe and monitor students’ behavior and inform teacher/principal of progress;
  • Liaise with parents and community agencies as required through the Principal;
  • Deliver disciplinary measures in accordance with the Code of Behavior and Catholic values;
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and perform other duties as assigned;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Child and Youth Worker Supervisor.
