CASUAL EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT

As a collaborative team member, the Casual Educational Assistant is responsible for the care of and facilitation of the education of students with special needs and exceptionalities in an educational setting. Casual Educational Assistants are responsible for providing direct care of and support to students with needs including but not limited to physical, safety, medical, behaviour, cognitive, communication and learning needs, in compliance with Board policies and procedures, utilizing Board approved tools and technology.

Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  Assist in the delivery of a daily program for students with special needs in both individual and group settings. This includes:

  • Ability to work with differing abilities/diverse learning needs
  • To supervise and assist individuals or groups of students in various environments
  • Assist students in the transition from home to school (e.g. bus duty supervision);
  • Support routines and rules in and outside of the classroom;
  • Facilitate the communication and interactions between students and the teacher; 
  • Assist in the preparation of materials, delivery of programs and tracking of students’ programs under the direction of the Teacher/SERT
  • Assist the teacher with student self-regulation and behaviour management including conflict management, crisis intervention, or de-escalation of student behaviour
  •  Ability to perform required physical tasks including personal care (toileting, lifting, feeding, changing of clothes and physical intervention) of students as required
  • Ability to deal with potentially stressful and emergent situations.
  • Provide support to the classroom teacher/SERT as may be required and/or as directed by school administration; and
  • Other related duties as assigned by school administration. 

Candidates must possess:

  • Community College Diploma in Educational Assistant (EA) / Educational Support (ES) preferred or equivalent, as deemed by the Employer (e.g. Child and Youth Worker, Developmental Service Worker, etc.) 
  • Ability to maintain discretion with confidential information and a high level of sensitivity and diplomacy
  • Ability to function independently within the framework of a team; and
  • Basic knowledge in the use of computer software and other communication supports as appropriate
  • Relevant additional training and/or related qualifications is an asset;
  • Experience working with students in special needs in an educational setting or related field (preferred)
  • A positive, compassionate and empathetic attitude towards all students;
  • To perform other duties as assigned.

The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board offers a Christ-centered education to over 13,000 students from Brant, Haldimand, and Norfolk counties, the City of Brantford, Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.
